Coastal Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center is proud to announce that Hans Hess, M.D., will be joining our practice on September 1, 2026. Dr. Hess is a board-eligible orthopaedic spine surgeon specializing in the comprehensive treatment of neck and back conditions. He has extensive training in minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery, utilizing advanced techniques designed to treat spinal conditions through smaller incisions, minimize disruption to surrounding tissues, and promote a safe and efficient recovery. Dr. Hess earned his Bachelor of Science in Genetics from Rutgers University and his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He subsequently completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Puerto Rico before pursuing advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic spine surgery at Houston Methodist, one of the nation’s leading hospitals and a major center for advanced spine care. During his fellowship, Dr. Hess received extensive training in minimally invasive, endoscopic, and complex spine surgery, including advanced approaches to the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His training allows him to offer contemporary surgical techniques aimed at minimizing disruption to normal anatomy while maintaining the principles of safe and effective spine surgery. Dr. Hess treats a wide range of spinal conditions, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, sciatica and nerve compression, spinal fractures and injuries, and spinal deformities. He believes surgery should be considered only when appropriate and works closely with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan that may include both non-operative and surgical options. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Hess offers a broad range of treatment options, from endoscopic and minimally invasive spine procedures to spinal fusion and reconstruction. His approach is focused on selecting the treatment that best fits each patient’s condition, lifestyle, and goals. A central part of Dr. Hess’s philosophy is ensuring that patients understand their diagnosis and the options available to them.
